Yeah, we do have a lot to thank him for. Would RPGs as we know them even exist if it wasn't for Gary Gygax and his mates fleshing out their wargames into Chainmail and later D&D? We'll never know, but as it is now, Gary truly was the father of the roleplaying games that I've been playing for the last 18 years or so.
I guess all I can do is give thanks.

A man who's touched on every gamer's life... A man we all will miss for the hours and days of entertainment that his one idea has given as all in the end.
Gygax, we all salute you.... Too bad the resurrection and reincarnation spells don't work in real life.

Wes & Dave Don: Will you do a special salute on the strip for him?
You know, it seems that everyone else has already done a Gygax tribute. We're already a little bit ahead (because we're in the middle of a story arc), so by the time we catch up to the present, it'll be a week or so after Gary's death and we kind of lose the timeliness of it. I think by the time we're ready, we'll have missed the boat. As I said, I thank the man for the legacy he paved for us. Much of the strip's content is directly or indirectly related to D&D and I've written a lot of work based on the D&D rule system. He's as much as an influence to S@10 as Breathed and Watterson. In a way, every time we crack some joke at role playing games, we're giving a silent, affirming nod in his direction.

Sorry to put in an idea for something that you have already shot down but...
You could do a pin-up/wallpaper of the gang exploring the tomb of horrors. It works as a tribute, a pin-up and fan service all rolled into one. Also since its not a direct tribute per se the timing is much less important and the meaning will be there for everyone who cares.
Just my two coppers...

I think that's actually a really good idea. Especially as death traps are funny when they're not happening to yourself

Today has a tribute to Gary from XKCD. Well, he always meant for D&D to have no winners or losers.
